Emergency Dental Care for Severe Toothache: Fast Relief in Calgary

Medically Reviewed by Dr. Al-Gertani (Owner, Dentist)

We get it. A severe toothache can completely derail your day and your night. When that kind of pain hits, you’re not thinking about your next meeting or what’s for dinner. You’re thinking one thing: how do I make this stop, and how do I make it stop now?

At The Dental Land in Calgary, we’ve seen it all. The 3 a.m. toothaches. The cracked tooth from biting down on popcorn. The swollen jaw that makes you look like you’re storing acorns for winter. And we’re here to tell you something important: you don’t have to tough it out. Relief is closer than you think.

Let’s talk about what’s causing that unbearable pain, when you absolutely need to call us (spoiler: probably sooner than you think), and how we can get you back to feeling like yourself again, often same day.

What’s Behind That Killer Toothache?

Not all toothaches are created equal. A little sensitivity to cold ice cream? That’s one thing. But intense, throbbing, can’t focus on anything else pain? That’s your mouth’s way of waving a big red flag.

Here are the usual suspects we see at our Calgary dental clinic.

Tooth Abscess: The Big One

This is probably the most common reason people rush through our doors. An abscess is basically an infection that’s set up camp at the root of your tooth or in your gums. The pain is often constant, throbbing, and it can radiate to your jaw, neck, or even your ear.

Here’s the thing. Abscesses don’t just hurt. They can become dangerous if left untreated. The infection can spread to other parts of your body, which is why we take these seriously and get you in fast.

Advanced Tooth Decay

When cavities get ignored long enough, they dig deeper and deeper until they hit the nerve-packed center of your tooth (the pulp). That’s when the real pain kicks in. If you’ve been putting off that filling, and now you’re paying for it, we’ve got you covered.

Cracked or Fractured Tooth

Sometimes you know exactly when it happened. Hello, hard candy. Other times, you have no idea. Either way, a crack in your tooth can cause sharp, shooting pain, especially when you bite down or drink something hot or cold. Cracks can be tricky because they don’t always show up on X-rays, but our team knows how to find them.

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease doesn’t just make your gums bleed. It can cause serious tooth pain, bone loss, and even loose teeth. If you’ve been ignoring your gums, they might be staging a protest.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Ah, wisdom teeth. Those late bloomers that cause nothing but trouble. When they can’t break through properly, they push against other teeth and surrounding tissue, causing pressure, swelling, and some seriously intense pain. If your wisdom teeth are acting up, let’s talk about getting them out before things get worse.

When Should You Actually Call Us?

Look, we know you’re busy. We know dental visits aren’t at the top of your fun things to do list. But some situations genuinely can’t wait.

If you’re dealing with pain that won’t quit, even with over-the-counter pain relievers, that’s your cue to pick up the phone. Same goes for swelling in your jaw, face, or neck. This is serious. A fever along with tooth pain means your body’s fighting an infection. Trouble swallowing or breathing? Get to us or the ER immediately. A knocked-out tooth needs attention right away because time matters here. Bleeding that won’t stop after a dental injury is another red flag. And if you’ve got a weird taste or smell in your mouth, that’s often a sign of infection.

Bottom line? If you’re in doubt, call us at 587-864-4300. We’d rather check you out and send you home with peace of mind than have you suffer through something that could get worse. Don’t try to be a hero. Toothaches don’t get better on their own.

What You Can Do at Home While You’re Waiting

Once you’ve called us and we’ve got you scheduled (often same day), here are some ways to manage the pain in the meantime.

Ibuprofen is usually your best bet because it tackles both pain and inflammation. Follow the directions on the bottle, and don’t overdo it. Acetaminophen works too, but it won’t help with swelling.

Clove oil is one of those old school remedies that actually works. It contains eugenol, which is a natural numbing agent. Dab a tiny bit on the sore tooth and surrounding gum with a cotton ball. It’s not a cure, but it can take the edge off.

An ice pack can help too. Grab one (or a bag of frozen peas), wrap it in a towel, and hold it against your cheek near the painful area. Do this for 20 minutes at a time. It helps reduce swelling and numbs things a bit.

A saltwater rinse is simple but effective. Mix warm water with a teaspoon of salt and gently swish it around your mouth. This can help reduce inflammation and keep the area clean while you wait to see us.

One more thing. When you lie flat, blood rushes to your head, which can make the throbbing worse. Prop yourself up with extra pillows when you sleep. It really does help.

Important reminder. These are temporary fixes. They’re band aids, not solutions. Don’t skip your appointment thinking things are better just because the pain has eased up a bit. The problem is still there, and it’s not going anywhere without professional help.

What Happens When You Come See Us

When you arrive at The Dental Land for an emergency, our first job is figuring out exactly what’s going on. We’ll do a thorough exam and take digital X-rays to get to the root of the problem (pun intended).

Depending on what we find, here are the common treatments we might recommend.

Root Canal Therapy

We know, we know. Nobody gets excited about root canals. But here’s the truth. Modern root canals aren’t the nightmare you’ve heard about. We numb the area thoroughly, remove the infected pulp, clean everything out, and seal it up. Most people say it feels similar to getting a filling. And the relief? Immediate.

Tooth Extraction

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or infected to save. If that’s the case, we’ll walk you through your options for replacing it, like dental implants or bridges, so you can leave with a plan for restoring your smile.

Antibiotics

If there’s a significant infection, we’ll prescribe antibiotics to knock out the bacteria and prevent it from spreading. But antibiotics alone won’t solve the problem. You’ll still need the dental treatment to fix what caused the infection in the first place.

Dental Crown

For cracked or severely damaged teeth that can still be saved, a custom crown can protect the tooth and restore its function. Think of it as a protective cap that keeps everything together and pain free.
